Meals on Wheels of Cheyenne celebrated its 55th anniversary in a meaningful way by inviting First Lady of Wyoming, Jennie Gordon, to take part in meal deliveries, highlighting the organization’s impact beyond providing food, Wyoming News Now reports.
While First Lady Gordon had previously volunteered in the Meals on Wheels kitchen, this year, she experienced the other side of the process—bringing meals directly to recipients.
“She’s come in before and helped in our kitchen, but this year, we thought how much fun would it be to actually have her go out and do the other side,” said Stephanie Freeman, Executive Director of Meals on Wheels of Cheyenne.
Gordon traveled around town, delivering meals, chatting with clients, and even meeting some of their curious pets along the way. Before heading out, she shared her enthusiasm for the experience, emphasizing that the program is “more than just a meal delivery.”
“They not only feed the people, but they feed their soul,” Gordon said. “Talking to seniors and clients who may not have many visitors is really important.”
The event served as a reminder of the crucial role Meals on Wheels plays in the community. Freeman noted that giving the First Lady the chance to engage with clients firsthand helped raise awareness about the program’s broader mission.
“It’s fantastic to bring that awareness and let her interact with our clients, so they see that there are others who care about their well-being,” Freeman said.
Through 55 years of service, Meals on Wheels of Cheyenne has remained dedicated to not only providing nourishment but also fostering connection and support for those in need.
