United States President Donald Trump has renewed discussion surrounding the potential annexation of Greenland, stating his belief that it is a matter of “when,” not “if,” as per Al Jazeera.
“I think Greenland’s going to be something that maybe is in our future. I think it’s important. It’s important from the standpoint of international security,” Trump stated during a cabinet meeting on Monday. He further added, “It cannot go on the way it is. It’s not going to go on the way it is.”
These comments coincide with the announcement of several upcoming high-profile US visits to Greenland this week. Second Lady Usha Vance, wife of Vice President JD Vance, is scheduled to arrive on Thursday for a cultural excursion that will include attending a dogsled race. In addition, National Security Advisor Mike Waltz and Energy Secretary Chris Wright are also expected to visit the island to tour a US military base.
President Trump’s remarks and the timing of these visits have drawn criticism and strong reactions. Greenland’s Prime Minister Mute Egede, in an interview with the newspaper Sermitsiaq, characterized the visits as a “provocation.”
