Trump Signs Executive Order Requiring Proof of Citizenship for Voting

US President Donald Trump signed an executive order on Tuesday mandating that prospective voters provide proof of US citizenship when registering for federal elections, as per Al Jazeera.
The order cites the need to address and “straighten out” election fraud as its justification.
The order directs the Election Assistance Commission to require prospective voters to present a US passport or other valid government-issued photo identification as proof of citizenship during voter registration for federal elections.
Additionally, the executive order instructs US states to ensure that all votes are received by election day and prohibits the counting of mail-in ballots arriving after the polls have closed.
During the signing ceremony at the White House, President Trump stated that the order would “hopefully” end election fraud. He also repeated his unsubstantiated claim that he won the 2020 presidential election “in a landslide.”
βAt least this will go a long way toward ending it, there are other steps that we will be taking in the coming weeks, and we think we will be able to end up getting fair elections,β Trump said.
The executive order marks the latest development in President Trump’s long-standing focus on alleged election fraud.
President Trump has previously questioned the outcomes of elections in which he was unsuccessful, including the 2020 presidential election, which he attributed to widespread voting irregularities.
