Darryk Shrader, a 31-year-old man from Newcastle, Wyoming, was arrested late Tuesday afternoon following a standoff at the Deadwood Mountain Grand parking ramp, KOTA reports.
The incident began earlier in the day when law enforcement agencies were investigating a domestic violence situation involving Shrader.
According to a statement from the Lawrence County Sheriff’s Office, the investigation led to Shrader fleeing the scene on Highway 85. A pursuit ensued, with officers from the Deadwood and Lead Police Departments joining the chase. At one point, tire spikes were deployed in an attempt to stop Shrader’s vehicle. Eventually, the vehicle was found wrecked in a wooded area south of Lead.
A second vehicle registered to Shrader was located on the top floor of the Deadwood Mountain Grand parking ramp. When a Deadwood police officer approached the car, she discovered Shrader barricaded inside, holding a gun.
After several hours of negotiation, Shrader surrendered shortly before 5 p.m. and was taken into custody by the Lawrence County Sheriff’s Office. The standoff prompted closures of several county buildings, including the courthouse, and led to the relocation of students from Deadwood Elementary School to alternative pickup sites.
Shrader was arrested without further incident, and the investigation into the domestic violence case continues.
