A fatal crash involving two semi-trucks on Interstate 80 near Rawlins resulted in the death of a 70-year-old Alabama woman earlier this month, according to the Wyoming Highway Patrol, KGAB AM 650 reports.

The accident occurred at approximately 8:57 a.m. on Saturday, March 15, near milepost 215.39 by the Cedar Street exit.

Authorities report that a westbound white Freightliner was crossing a bridge deck when the driver lost control, causing the truck to jackknife and break through the median cable barrier and guardrail. The truck then collided head-on with the cab of an eastbound red Freightliner.

The impact resulted in the death of Mary Couch, who was reportedly resting in the sleeper berth of the eastbound truck. One of the drivers also sustained injuries.

At the time of the accident, snowy and icy conditions were reported on the interstate. Officials have cited speed as a possible contributing factor in the crash.

Mary Couch was a veteran of the trucking industry, having worked in various roles for decades. She spent the last 20 years as a team driver, often traveling through challenging road conditions across the country.

Originally from Alma, Georgia, Couch was a mother, grandmother, great-grandmother, sister, and friend. She was known for her strong work ethic and dedication to uplifting others, particularly women in the trucking profession.

Couch was just months away from retirement and had been looking forward to spending more time with her family.

Her funeral services are scheduled for March 29, 2025, at Bernhardt Funeral Home in Ellijay, Georgia, with interment to follow at Yukon Cemetery.

Her passing marks the 19th traffic fatality on Wyoming highways this year.
