At least five people were wounded in a stabbing attack in the heart of Amsterdam on Thursday, Al Jazeera reports.

One suspect has been arrested in connection with the incident, which occurred near the central Dam Square.

Dutch authorities have identified the victims as a 67-year-old woman and a 69-year-old man, both American nationals, a 26-year-old man from Poland, a 73-year-old woman from Belgium, and a 19-year-old woman from Amsterdam.

Police stated that the attack took place on a nearby street around 3:30 PM (14:30 GMT). Dam Square was cordoned off for approximately two hours before being reopened to the public.

Emergency services, including a trauma helicopter that landed on Dam Square, responded to the scene to provide medical assistance to the injured. Police vans and ambulances were also present.

Initial reports indicated that four people were seriously wounded, but Amsterdam police later clarified the number of victims in a statement on X.

“Update: in the stabbing incident this afternoon, there were not four but five people wounded. In addition, the suspect himself is also injured,” the police announced.
