The 2025 Wyoming high school spring sports season is officially underway, bringing some notable changes to classifications, conference alignments, and championship locations, WyoPreps reports.
Track and field, soccer, and softball have already kicked off their seasons, with spring golf and tennis set to follow.
Soccer
The main change in high school soccer this year is Green River’s return to Class 4A due to Wyoming High School Activities Association’s (WHSAA) enrollment adjustments. This shifts Class 4A to 15 teams, with eight in the West Conference and seven in the East. Class 3A remains balanced with six teams in each conference.
The 4A regional soccer tournaments are scheduled for May 15-17, with the East tournament in Gillette and the West tournament in Green River. The state championships will take place in Gillette for the next two years, with this season’s tournament set for May 22-24.
Softball
High school softball in Wyoming is expanding, with three new varsity teams—Jackson, Sheridan, and Torrington—joining the competition. This increases the total number of teams to 16 and introduces a new conference structure. Instead of the previous East-West split, teams are now divided into North and South Conferences:
North Conference: Campbell County, Cody, Jackson, Kelly Walsh, Natrona County, Sheridan, Thunder Basin, Worland.
South Conference: Cheyenne Central, Cheyenne East, Cheyenne South, Green River, Laramie, Rock Springs, Torrington, Wheatland.
Additionally, the conferences are divided into four scheduling quadrants. Teams play each team in their quadrant twice (home and away) and teams from the opposite quadrant once, with the first game of each matchup counting toward conference standings.
For the first time, state tournament qualification will come through regional tournaments rather than regular-season standings. The regional tournaments are set for May 16-17 in Casper (North, hosted by Natrona County) and Laramie (South). The state championships will be hosted in Cheyenne for the next two years, with this year’s tournament scheduled for May 22-24.
Track and Field
Changes in track and field are primarily due to enrollment shifts affecting team classifications.
Burns and Cody are now in Class 3A.
Moorcroft and Thermopolis move to Class 2A.
Lingle-Ft. Laramie and Lusk now compete in Class 1A.
Regional track meets will be hosted in various locations across the state, including Torrington, Shoshoni, Buffalo, Powell, Evanston, and Gillette. The 2025 Wyoming High School Track and Field State Championships will be held in Casper at Harry Geldien Stadium from May 22-24.
Spring Golf and Tennis
The spring golf and tennis seasons begin practice on March 31, 2025, with competitions set to start the following week.
