A recent study by WalletHub analyzed clothing costs across all 50 states, ranking Wyoming as the 17th most expensive state to purchase clothing in relation to income.

The study examined the average prices of a men’s dress shirt, a pair of boys’ jeans, and a pair of women’s slacks. The combined cost of these items was then compared to the median household income in each state. According to the findings, Wyoming residents spend approximately 1.67% of their annual income on clothing.

While clothing is an essential part of daily life, the study highlights the financial balance between necessity and affordability. Like most consumer goods, clothing prices have risen sharply in recent years, making budgeting even more crucial.

Wyoming falls near the middle of the rankings. The state with the highest clothing costs relative to income is Kentucky (2.4%), while Nevada (1.1%) ranked as the most affordable state.

Here’s how Wyoming compares to neighboring states:

  • Utah ranked 10th, with residents spending 1.86% of their income on clothing.

  • Montana ranked 22nd at 1.57%.

  • Colorado ranked 41st at 1.33%.

  • Idaho ranked 32nd at 1.49%.

To help consumers manage clothing costs, WalletHub suggests:

  • Shopping sales and using coupons to find the best deals.

  • Buying second-hand at thrift stores or consignment shops.

  • Avoiding designer brands, which often have high markups.

  • Joining local community groups where people give away or sell clothing at low prices.
