Sherri Geringer, former First Lady of Wyoming, passed away on April 5, 2025, after an extended illness. She was 79 years old.

Geringer, the wife of former Governor Jim Geringer, served as Wyoming’s First Lady from 1995 to 2003 and was widely known for her dedication to public service and community involvement.

Born in 1945, Geringer met her husband, Jim, while attending college in Kansas. The couple recently celebrated their 58th wedding anniversary, surrounded by their children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren.

Throughout her time as First Lady, Geringer played a vital role in Wyoming’s literacy and health initiatives. She helped launch Raising Readers in Wyoming, a program promoting early childhood literacy, and was a strong advocate for breast cancer awareness. She also worked closely with organizations such as the Women’s Civic League of Cheyenne and local domestic violence shelters.

Her son, Rep. Rob Geringer, described her as a quiet leader who brought people together and left a lasting impact on those around her.

Friends and colleagues remember Sherri Geringer for her warmth, grace, and hospitality. She was instrumental in organizing events at the Wyoming Governor’s Mansion, ensuring that visitors felt welcome.

“She had good instincts and a quiet, classy approach to her work as First Lady,” said Mary Kay Hill, who managed Jim Geringer’s 1994 gubernatorial campaign.

Even after her official role ended, Geringer continued to serve her community. In 2023, she and her husband opened their 9,000-square-foot residence for the General Federation of Women’s Clubs Women’s Civic League of Cheyenne Christmas House, a tradition she deeply cherished.

Despite facing health challenges following a stroke in 2018, she remained actively involved in causes she cared about.

Wyoming leaders have expressed their condolences and shared memories of Sherri Geringer:

  • Governor Mark Gordon praised her resilience and dedication:
“Her grace under exceptionally trying circumstances over the past few years was extraordinary. Her love of Wyoming, care for its people, and devotion to her family will be deeply missed.”

  • U.S. Senator Cynthia Lummis called her a beloved figure in Wyoming:
“Her passionate advocacy, warmth, and friendship made her cherished across the state. I’m keeping Gov. Geringer and their family in my prayers.”

  • Former Superintendent of Public Instruction Judy Catchpole recalled their close friendship:
“She was a wonderful friend and an even better cook. We shared long road trips, conversations about our families, and countless laughs.”
