Jay North, best known for his iconic role as the towheaded, perpetually mischievous Dennis Mitchell on the classic television sitcom “Dennis the Menace,” has passed away at the age of 73, The Associated Press reports.
North succumbed to colon cancer on Sunday at his home in Lake Butler, Florida, according to longtime friend Laurie Jacobson and booking agent Bonnie Vent.
North captured the hearts of a generation as the smiling, pint-sized troublemaker on the CBS show, which ran for four seasons beginning in 1959. He was only six years old when he was cast in the role, bringing to life Hank Ketcham’s beloved comic strip character in an idyllic suburban setting.
Dressed in his signature striped shirt and overalls, Dennis’ well-intentioned but chaotic escapades provided endless amusement for audiences, much to the chagrin of his retired next-door neighbor, George Wilson, played by Joseph Kearns. Herbert Anderson and Gloria Henry portrayed Dennis’ endlessly patient parents.
“”Dennis the Menace” aired on Sunday nights until its cancellation in 1963 but lived on for decades in syndication, introducing new generations to the show’s timeless humor.
Following his breakout role, North continued to act, appearing in a variety of television shows including “The Man from U.N.C.L.E.,” “The Lucy Show,” “My Three Sons,” “Lassie,” and even “The Simpsons.” He also graced the silver screen in films like “Maya” (1966), “The Teacher” (1974), and “Dickie Robert: Former Child Star” (2003).
Jay North is survived by his third wife, Cindy, and three stepdaughters. His portrayal of Dennis the Menace will forever remain a cherished part of television history, bringing smiles and laughter to audiences for years to come.
