Ecuador Re-elects President Daniel Noboa in Runoff Victory

Daniel Noboa, the right-wing, tough-on-crime President of Ecuador, has secured a victory in Sunday’s runoff election, defeating Luisa González of the leftist Citizen Revolution Movement, Fox News reports.
Noboa, representing the National Democratic Action party, garnered approximately 55.8% of the vote, compared to González’s 44%, according to the National Electoral Council. The Associated Press reports that over 90% of ballots have been tabulated.
Over 13 million Ecuadoreans were eligible to vote in the election, where participation is compulsory.
Noboa, a Miami-born heir to a substantial banana trade fortune, initially surprised many by winning a 16-month presidency in a 2023 snap election following the impeachment of former President Guillermo Lasso. Despite his relative inexperience in politics, Noboa has successfully capitalized on a platform focused on tackling crime and insecurity in the country.
González represented the Citizen Revolution Movement, the party of influential former President Rafael Correa.
