Millions of Americans will receive their Social Security benefits this week as part of the latest round of monthly distributions by the Social Security Administration (SSA), Newsweek reports.
These payments, which support retirees, survivors, and individuals with disabilities, are critical to nearly 70 million recipients nationwide.
On Wednesday, April 16, the SSA will distribute payments to beneficiaries whose birthdays fall between the 11th and 20th of any month. The timing of Social Security retirement payments depends on the beneficiary’s birth date, with payments staggered across the month to manage distribution efficiently.
Monthly benefit amounts vary based on the type of claim and the recipient’s retirement age. In 2025, the maximum Social Security retirement benefit is:
$2,831 for those retiring early at age 62
$4,018 for those retiring at the full retirement age of 67
$5,108 for those who delay retirement until age 70
Supplemental Security Income (SSI), a separate benefit designed to assist elderly, blind, or disabled individuals with limited financial resources, also varies by circumstance. In 2025, the maximum SSI payments are:
$967 per month for individuals
$1,450 per month for couples
After this week’s distribution, only one more round of payments is scheduled for April. Beneficiaries with birth dates between the 21st and 31st of any month will receive their checks on April 23. If a payment is delayed, recipients are advised to wait three business days before contacting the SSA.
The SSA has also introduced changes to how claims are processed by phone. Starting April 14, 2025, individuals can complete all types of benefit claims via telephone. This service is now supported by enhanced fraud detection measures.
The agency initially planned to phase out identity verification over the phone due to fraud concerns but revised its decision last week. In a statement, Acting Commissioner Leland Dudek said:
“We are modernizing how we serve the public—enhancing both security and accessibility.”
