Hungary’s parliament has approved a constitutional amendment effectively banning all public events organized by LGBTQ+ groups, including the annual Budapest Pride March, Al Jazeera reports.
The amendment, passed on Monday with a two-thirds majority secured by Prime Minister Viktor Orban’s ruling Fidesz-KDNP coalition (140 votes in favor, 21 against), formalizes a law introduced earlier this year prohibiting such gatherings.
Orban’s government defends the legislation as necessary to protect “traditional family values” and children. The revised constitutional text prioritizes a child’s right to moral, physical, and spiritual development above all rights except the right to life.
The amendment also enshrines the “child protection” legislation into the constitution, prohibiting the “depiction or promotion” of homosexuality to minors. It affirms that the constitution recognizes only two sexes, male and female, reinforcing a previous amendment that bans same-sex adoption by defining a mother as a woman and a father as a man.
