Chance Morris, one of Wyoming’s fastest high school track athletes, will be trading his blue and gold for the brown and gold of the University of Wyoming, Sheridan Media reports.
Morris, a senior at Sheridan High School, has officially signed an offer of athletic aid to compete for the UW Cowboys Track and Field team.
Morris is well-known for his impressive achievements on the track. Last year, he claimed the 4A Outdoor State Championship in both the 100 and 200-meter dash events. This year, he added to his accolades by winning the 55 and 200-meter dash titles at the Indoor State Championships, while also setting new state records in both events.
Despite only competing in track for three years, Morris has already made a significant impact. He was approached by several other schools, including Colorado State, Boise State, and South Dakota State, but said they were not offering the scholarship support he felt he deserved.
“None of them had scholarship money,” Morris explained. “They all wanted me on their team as a walk-on, but I didn’t want to do that. I feel like I was better than a walk-on. I felt like I deserved at least a little bit of money.”
Morris also shared his goal of showcasing Wyoming’s potential in sprinting.
“My goal this year was to kind of show the country that Wyoming isn’t just a distance state. They got some sprinters. They got some athletes. They’re not just a Cowboy State,” he said.
He expressed his enthusiasm for joining the University of Wyoming’s track program, particularly impressed by their efforts to recruit in-state athletes.
“They want to build a Wyoming team as much as they can, and I think that it’s going to be more possible now, because the Wyoming competition has gotten so much better. I just think they wanted me because I’m a hard worker, and I’ve got the right times for it.”
