France Hosts US Officials for Talks on Ending Ukraine War

French President Emmanuel Macron hosted senior United States officials in Paris on Thursday for discussions focused on ending the war in Ukraine, Al Jazeera reports.
The meeting comes as European allies seek to play a greater role in mediating an end to the conflict amid existing tensions with Washington.
Following the talks with US Secretary of State Marco Rubio and US envoy Steve Witkoff, Macron stated that the meeting was “a very important occasion for convergence.” He added:
“Everyone wants to get peace – a robust and sustainable peace. The question is about phasing.”
The Trump administration has been actively pursuing an end to the Russia-Ukraine war, with President Trump engaging in bilateral discussions with both Russian President Vladimir Putin and Ukrainian leader Volodymyr Zelensky.
Despite these efforts, a resolution has yet to be reached, and President Trump has reportedly expressed frustration with both Moscow and Kyiv.
Last month, Ukraine agreed to a ceasefire proposal put forward by the Trump administration, but Russia rejected the idea. The parties have only agreed to limitations on attacks targeting energy infrastructure and maritime areas, with both sides accusing the other of violating these agreements.
