Pope Francis, the 88-year-old leader of the Catholic Church, has died on Easter Monday following a stroke and cardiac arrest, the Vatican announced, as per Fox News.

Pope Francis suffered a stroke in the early morning of April 21, leading to a coma followed by a heart attack.

The Pope’s passing comes after a period of ongoing health concerns, including a recent hospitalization for double pneumonia.

Just one day before his death, Pope Francis met with US Vice President JD Vance at Vatican City.

The official announcement of his death was made at the Pope’s residence in the Chapel of St. Martha on Monday. While the pontiff’s recent struggle with pneumonia raised concerns about his health, the stroke that ultimately led to his death came as a surprise, according to reports.

Strokes are a significant health concern globally, ranking as the fifth leading cause of death in the United States and a major contributor to disability, according to the American Stroke Association. The association notes that ischemic strokes, which occur when a blood vessel to the brain is blocked, are the most common type, accounting for 87% of all stroke cases.
