A Reliance, Wyoming, man has been sentenced to 22 to 27 years in prison after pleading “no contest” to multiple counts of child pornography possession and distribution, Cowboy State Daily reports.

Justin Ernest Golay, 34, entered his plea to 23 of the 54 charges initially filed against him. The remaining charges, including those involving more legally complex allegations, were dismissed as part of a court agreement.

According to a sentencing order issued by Sweetwater County District Court Judge Suzannah Lavery, Golay’s plea did not include charges related to alleged possession of images involving deceased children, which raised questions about the scope of Wyoming’s existing child pornography laws. Sweetwater County Attorney Daniel Erramouspe noted that had Golay been convicted on those specific counts, it could have prompted a legal review regarding whether state law applies when the individuals depicted are no longer living. Wyoming does not currently have laws specifically addressing necrophilia.

The case began in October when the National Center for Missing and Exploited Children alerted authorities to potential online child exploitation activity linked to Golay’s IP address. The Wyoming Division of Criminal Investigation (DCI) launched an inquiry, led by Agent Joel Greene, which uncovered a large volume of graphic and illegal material on Golay’s electronic devices.

A search warrant executed on December 17 revealed disturbing content, including images and videos depicting severe abuse of young children. Some files showed victims in extremely distressing and violent situations. Investigators also uncovered chat logs where Golay allegedly discussed and exchanged illegal material with others.

During the sentencing hearing on April 8, the prosecution recommended a much longer prison term of 138 to 230 years. However, the court settled on the lower sentencing range after Golay’s plea agreement excluded the more controversial allegations.

Authorities have described the investigation as particularly harrowing due to the nature of the materials involved.
