The city of Uvalde, Texas, has reached a settlement agreement with the families of victims of the 2022 Robb Elementary School shooting, marking a significant development in the community’s ongoing efforts to heal following the tragedy, NBC News reports.
Uvalde’s City Council voted unanimously on Tuesday to approve the agreement. The terms of the settlement remain confidential.
“Nothing can ever make up the losses and harms these families endured on May 24, 2022,” Mayor Hector Luevano said during the council meeting. “But today’s agreement marks an important step forward in advancing community healing, ensuring our city forever honors the lives we tragically lost, and supporting all surviving victims in the 2022 Robb Elementary shooting.”
The agreement comes in the wake of several lawsuits filed in the aftermath of the shooting, which claimed the lives of 19 fourth-grade students and two teachers after a gunman entered the school. Much of the public criticism has focused on the law enforcement response, prompting calls for greater accountability and reform.
While details of the settlement were not made public, Mayor Luevano announced that the city will work closely with family representatives on plans for a permanent memorial to honor the victims.
The mayor also reiterated the city’s commitment to enhancing public safety through the Uvalde Police Department’s Guardian initiative. The program includes expanded emergency response training, officer evaluations, and mental health support. Luevano emphasized that these efforts aim to restore trust and strengthen the department’s role in protecting the community.
“We look forward to our continued work and collaboration with the Robb families to ensure the Uvalde community can move forward on the path of collective healing and reconciliation,” Luevano said.
An attorney representing the families was not immediately available for comment.
The Robb Elementary shooting stands as one of the deadliest school shootings in US history. Since the event, survivors and family members of victims have sought both justice and systemic change, pressing local, state, and federal officials for reform and accountability.
