Preliminary data from the Wyoming Department of Health (WDH) indicate increases in births, deaths, and marriages across the state in 2024 compared to the previous year, Oil City News reports.
At the same time, the number of divorces decreased, according to figures from the department’s Vital Statistics Services (VSS).
Births
A total of 6,079 births were recorded to Wyoming resident mothers in 2024, an increase from 5,989 in 2023. Although the number of in-state births declined slightly — from 5,337 in 2023 to 5,281 in 2024 — this discrepancy is attributed to some Wyoming residents giving birth in neighboring states.
“While a small number of births happen within the state to non-residents, it is reasonable to assume the difference reflects Wyoming mothers delivering in other states,” explained Kyndra Herrera, deputy state registrar with VSS.
Deaths
The number of recorded deaths among Wyoming residents rose to 5,725 in 2024, up from 5,566 in 2023. Leading causes of death remained consistent and included heart disease, cancer, chronic respiratory diseases, accidental deaths, and stroke-related conditions.
Despite not ranking among the top causes, suicide and drug overdoses remain significant concerns. In 2024, 168 suicide deaths were reported — up from 156 in 2023 — with approximately 88% of those involving male individuals. Firearms were used in about 72% of these cases.
Overdose deaths declined in 2024 to 97, compared to 120 the year before. Most overdose fatalities involved illicit drugs (62%), followed by prescription drugs (31%), and combinations of substances (3%). Methamphetamine and opioids were frequently involved.
WDH Director Stefan Johansson emphasized the broader community impact of these deaths.
“The tragic and unexpected nature of these losses can have a wide ripple effect,” he said.
Johansson noted that annual changes should be viewed cautiously given Wyoming’s relatively small population.
Marriages and Divorces
Marriage numbers increased significantly, with 4,493 unions recorded in 2024 — up from 4,093 in 2023. Meanwhile, the number of divorces fell to 1,901, continuing a gradual downward trend seen in recent years.
More detailed data, including finalized numbers, will be available as the health department completes its review. Additional information about Vital Statistics Services can be found at health.wyo.gov/admin/vitalstatistics.
