The race to replace retiring Senator Dick Durbin of Illinois is intensifying as Representative Raja Krishnamoorthi announces his candidacy for the seat in 2026, bringing a significant advantage to the competitive Democratic primary with a $19 million war chest, Bloomberg reports.

Krishnamoorthi, a lawyer who represents a district including Schaumburg and other Chicago suburbs, has been serving in Congress since 2016. He made the announcement Wednesday, setting the stage for what is expected to be a fierce contest for the seat. The 51-year-old, known for his outspoken criticism of President Donald Trump, brings a history of fighting for working-class families, especially around issues like government assistance programs. He has been vocal in his defense of nutrition assistance programs and housing subsidies, sharing his personal experience growing up in a family that benefited from such programs.

“I’ve made it my mission to fight for families like the ones I grew up with,” Krishnamoorthi said in a campaign video.

Krishnamoorthi also highlighted his background as a campaign staffer for former President Barack Obama, who he says inspired his political aspirations.

“Obama showed that Illinois will give you a shot, even if you have a funny name,” he said, referencing his own immigrant background as the son of Indian parents.

In addition to his political experience, Krishnamoorthi’s fundraising ability is already making waves. He raised $3 million in the first quarter of this year, bringing his total cash on hand to $19 million. His campaign has attracted significant donations, including from notable figures such as attorney David Boies and investment leaders Mellody Hobson and John W. Rogers Jr. of Ariel Investments, as well as the CME Group.

Krishnamoorthi is entering a crowded Democratic primary that already includes Illinois Lieutenant Governor Juliana Stratton and Representative Robin Kelly.
