US Shifts Focus from Temporary Ceasefire to Long-Term Peace in Ukraine War, Says VP JD Vance

The United States is pivoting away from efforts to secure a short-term ceasefire in the war on Ukraine, instead focusing on forging a durable peace agreement, Vice President JD Vance said Wednesday, as per Bloomberg.
Speaking at the Munich Leaders Meeting in Washington, Vance acknowledged growing frustration within the White House after President Donald Trump failed to meet his self-imposed deadline of ending the war within his first 100 days in office.
“We’ve tried to move beyond the obsession with a 30-day ceasefire and more on what the long-term settlement would look like,” Vance said. “We’ve tried to consistently advance the ball.”
Vance stressed the need for direct engagement between Russia and Ukraine and reiterated Trump’s warning that the US may withdraw from peace talks if progress stalls.
“We would like both the Russians and Ukrainians to actually agree on some basic guidelines for sitting down and talking to one another,” he said.
While the US is open to participating in future talks, he emphasized that the dialogue must be led by the warring parties.
The comments come amid continued deadlock in negotiations.
Last month, Vance drew criticism for stating that both sides may need to make territorial concessions to end the war that began in 2022.
