Volvo Cars is recalling more than 450,000 vehicles in the US and Canada over a malfunctioning rearview camera system that could increase the risk of crashes, the Swedish automaker confirmed, as per Fox News.

A total of 413,151 vehicles are being recalled in the United States, along with 40,673 in Canada, due to a defect that may prevent the rearview camera image from displaying when the vehicle is placed in reverse. The issue raises the risk of accidents, according to a Volvo spokesperson.

The recall affects a range of Volvo models, including:

  • 2021–2025 XC40
  • 2022 V90
  • 2022–2025 S90, V90 Cross Country (V90CC), C40, and XC60
  • 2023–2025 S60, V60, V60 Cross Country (V60CC), and XC90

To correct the issue, Volvo will perform a software upgrade on the affected vehicles. Owners can receive the update free of charge either by visiting an authorized Volvo dealership or via an over-the-air (OTA) update, which allows the software to be installed remotely without visiting a service center.

Despite the defect, Volvo stated in a recall notice issued on May 1 by the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) that no accidents or injuries related to the malfunction have been reported.

“We encourage customers to contact their authorized Volvo Retailer and have this recall repair completed as soon as possible,” the company said in the NHTSA filing.

Notification letters are expected to be mailed to impacted owners starting June 24. Volvo owners with questions can contact Volvo Car customer service or reach out to the NHTSA Vehicle Safety Hotline for additional information.

The Volvo recall follows a similar action by EV maker Polestar, which recalled over 27,000 Polestar 2 vehicles in the U.S. last week due to a related rearview camera display issue.
