Owners of Siri-enabled Apple devices may be eligible for a portion of a $95 million class-action settlement stemming from a lawsuit that alleged Apple’s virtual assistant, Siri, recorded users without consent, Axios reports.

The settlement is the result of Lopez v. Apple, a case filed in 2019 following claims that Siri sometimes activated and recorded conversations without being prompted by the typical “Hey, Siri” command. Plaintiffs argued this violated users’ expectations of privacy, especially during sensitive conversations.

Apple has denied the allegations and maintains that Siri has been designed with user privacy in mind.

“Apple settled this case to avoid additional litigation so we can move forward from concerns about third-party grading that we already addressed in 2019,” a company spokesperson said.

The company also emphasized that Siri data has never been sold or used for marketing purposes.

Consumers who owned or purchased certain Apple devices with Siri enabled between September 17, 2014, and December 31, 2024, may be eligible for compensation. This includes iPhones, iPads, Apple Watches, Macs, HomePods, iPod touches, and Apple TVs.

Eligible class members can receive up to $20 per device, for up to five devices, if they experienced at least one unintentional Siri activation during a private conversation. The final amount may vary depending on the number of claims submitted.

Claims can be submitted through the official Lopez Voice Assistant Settlement website. Some individuals received emails or postcards with a claim ID and confirmation code, but others can still submit a claim manually if they meet the eligibility criteria.

Claimants must attest under penalty of perjury that they:

  • Owned or purchased a Siri-enabled Apple device in the US or its territories;

  • Enabled Siri on the device(s);

  • Experienced at least one unintended Siri activation during a conversation intended to be confidential or private.

Important Deadlines

  • Claim submission deadline: July 2, 2025

  • Deadline to opt out or object: Also July 2, 2025 (must be mailed)

A final approval hearing is scheduled for August 1, 2025, at the US District Court for the Northern District of California in Oakland. If the court approves the settlement and there are no appeals, payments will be distributed shortly after. Updates on the process will be posted on the settlement website.

For those unsure of their eligibility, the settlement website provides contact details for further assistance.
