Conservative author and former Treasury official Monica Crowley was confirmed late Monday as assistant secretary of state and chief of protocol with the rank of ambassador, Fox News reports.
A longtime media figure, Crowley previously served in the first Trump administration, where she received the Alexander Hamilton Award—one of the Treasury Department’s highest honors. In her new role, she will represent the administration at major U.S.-hosted international events, including the United States’ 250th anniversary in 2026, the FIFA World Cup the same year, and the 2028 Summer Olympics in Los Angeles.
“Monica will be the administration representative for major U.S.-hosted events,” President Donald Trump said in a statement announcing her nomination in December.
Crowley holds a doctorate in international relations from Columbia University and began her career as a research assistant to former President Richard Nixon. She later chronicled that experience in her book Nixon Off the Record.
An Arizona native who grew up in New Jersey, Crowley joined Fox News Channel in 1996 and became a frequent guest on “Hannity” and “Hannity & Colmes.” She also hosted The Monica Crowley Show, a syndicated radio program, and made a brief cameo as herself in the political drama House of Cards.
Despite stepping back from a National Security Council appointment during Trump’s first term amid plagiarism allegations in her academic work—a controversy she dismissed as a “hit job”—Crowley maintained a prominent voice in conservative political circles.
The U.S. Travel Association welcomed her appointment, describing her as a key figure in promoting America’s global profile in the coming years.
“The speed with which this decision was made gives us great confidence that … Trump will seek to maximize the opportunities of the decade of sports and events that lies ahead,” said Geoff Freeman, CEO of the association. “Landmark moments will attract millions of travelers to America and showcase the best of our great nation while creating a lasting benefit to our economy.”
Crowley has also been recognized for her contributions to conservative thought, receiving Woman of the Year honors in 2010 from the Clare Boothe Luce Center for Conservative Women.
