Trump Defends Acceptance of $400M Qatari Jet Amidst Backlash

President Donald Trump has come under scrutiny for his decision to accept a $400 million Boeing 747-8 luxury jet from the Qatari royal family, Fox News reports.
The aircraft, intended to serve as a temporary Air Force One due to delays in Boeing’s production of new presidential planes, has sparked controversy over legal, ethical, and security concerns.
In an exclusive interview aboard Air Force One with Fox News’ Sean Hannity, Trump defended the acceptance of the jet, stating:
“Why wouldn’t I accept the gift? We’re giving to everybody else.”
He emphasized the outdated nature of the current Air Force One, which is nearly 40 years old, and expressed a desire for the United States to have the “most impressive plane.”
The luxury jet, described as a “flying palace,” was offered by Qatar as a diplomatic gift to the U.S. Department of Defense. Trump noted that the plane would be used temporarily until Boeing delivers the new Air Force One fleet, expected in 2029. He also mentioned plans to retire the jet to his presidential library after his term.
However, the acceptance of such a lavish gift from a foreign government has raised concerns among lawmakers and ethics experts. Critics argue that it may violate the Constitution’s emoluments clause, which prohibits federal officials from receiving gifts from foreign governments without congressional approval. Senators Rick Scott and Josh Hawley have expressed discomfort, citing security concerns and advocating for the use of American-made aircraft.
Despite the backlash, Trump remains steadfast in his decision, asserting that accepting the jet is a cost-saving measure that benefits the country. He reiterated that the gift is to the Department of Defense, not to him personally, and framed it as a reward for the U.S. military’s successful defense of Qatar over the years.
