Ford Motor Company is recalling nearly 274,000 of its large SUVs across the United States due to a potential issue with the braking system that could lead to a loss of brake function and increase the risk of a crash, NPR reports.
According to documents released by the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA), the recall includes 223,315 Ford Expeditions and 50,474 Lincoln Navigators from model years 2022 through 2024. The issue stems from a possible installation defect that may cause the front brake lines to come into contact with the engine air cleaner outlet pipe. This contact could result in brake fluid leaks, which may impair braking performance.
Ford has reported that it expects only about 1% of the affected vehicles to exhibit the defect. As of April 17, the automaker had received 45 warranty claims related to front brake line leaks. No crashes or injuries have been reported in connection with the issue.
Drivers with impacted vehicles may notice an increase in brake pedal travel—meaning they must press the pedal harder to stop the vehicle. In cases where the brake fluid level drops significantly, a red warning light may illuminate on the dashboard.
To address the problem, Ford and Lincoln dealers will inspect the affected brake lines and either reposition or replace them, as well as the air cleaner outlet pipe if needed. These repairs will be performed free of charge. Dealer notifications began Wednesday, and owners are expected to receive official recall letters between May 26 and May 30.
In the meantime, owners can check whether their vehicle is included in the recall by visiting the NHTSA recall website or using Ford’s recall lookup tool. The official recall number is 25S47.
A Ford spokesperson declined to offer additional comments when contacted by the Associated Press.
