University of Wyoming freshman Taliah Morris is off to a strong start in her collegiate track and field career and will represent the Cowgirls in four events at the Mountain West Outdoor Track & Field Championships, held Thursday through Saturday in Clovis, California, University of Wyoming Athletics reports.

A 15-time state champion from Cheyenne East High School, Morris chose to stay in her home state for college, turning down opportunities at programs in warmer climates to join Wyoming’s team under the leadership of assistant coach Quincy Howe. Her decision was motivated by a belief in the coaching staff and the positive team culture.

Morris made an immediate impact at UW, breaking the school record in the 200-meter dash with a time of 23.64 seconds, surpassing the previous mark set by Jessica Fox in 2004. She also climbed to No. 3 in school history in the 100-meter dash with a personal best of 11.67 seconds, recorded earlier this month at the Doug Max Invitational in Fort Collins.

In addition to her individual events, Morris contributed to the 4×100-meter relay team’s victory alongside teammates Megan Witkiewicz, Elayna Chafee, and Gabby Drube. Their time of 45.60 seconds now ranks sixth in Cowgirl program history.

“It’s definitely been a surprise to make such an immediate impact,” Morris said. “It’s been a great confidence boost, and I’m really grateful for this program.”

Morris will compete in the long jump, 100 meters, 200 meters, and 4×100-meter relay at the MW Championships. Her performances this season have already placed her among the top contenders in the conference, despite being a freshman.

“Taliah is a great kid. She loves to compete,” said head coach Bryan Berryhill on the One Wyoming Podcast. “She’s in a scoring position in the 100, 200, and long jump. That’s hard to do in such a competitive conference, especially in your first year.”

Morris is part of a larger group of homegrown talent on the Cowgirls’ roster. Allyson Fertig, the Mountain West women’s basketball player of the year, is also competing in shot put, while Gabby Drube, a senior from Gillette, returns to the track after finishing fourth in the 400-meter hurdles at last year’s MW Championships.

As the next generation of Cowgirl track and field athletes emerges, Morris appears poised to lead the way. Her talent, work ethic, and quick adjustment to collegiate competition signal a bright future ahead.
