Moldovan President Maia Sandu cast her ballot in the second round of Romania’s presidential election, sparking renewed accusations of political interference from opposition figures in Moldova.
The vote took place at the Romanian embassy in Tirana, Albania.
“President Maia Sandu concluded her participation in the European Political Community Summit in Albania with a natural gesture for any engaged citizen: she voted at the Romanian Embassy in Tirana,”” Sandu’s spokesperson, Igor Zaharov, said on Facebook.
Sandu holds dual citizenship in both Moldova and Romania, allowing her to participate in Romanian elections. However, her open involvement in Romania’s political process has drawn criticism at home.
On May 13, former Moldovan Prime Minister and current leader of the opposition Liberal Democratic Party of Moldova, Vlad Filat, accused Sandu and her ruling Party of Action and Solidarity of directly interfering in Romania’s electoral affairs. Filat reminded the public that Sandu’s party had officially endorsed National Liberal Party candidate Nicolae Ciucă ahead of the Romanian elections in November 2024.
