Two Aides to Mexico City Mayor Shot Dead in Early Morning Ambush

Two senior aides to Mexico City Mayor Clara Brugada were gunned down early Tuesday in the latest deadly attack targeting public officials in Mexico, Al Jazeera reports.
Private secretary Ximena Guzmán and policy adviser José Muñoz were killed in an ambush in the capital’s central Moderna neighborhood. The shooting occurred in the early morning hours, sparking shock and condemnation from officials at both the city and federal levels.
Mayor Brugada denounced the killings and reaffirmed her commitment to combating violence in the capital.
Mexican President Claudia Sheinbaum, who previously served as mayor of Mexico City and is a political ally of Brugada, also offered her condolences and pledged federal support.
“We express our solidarity and support for the families of these two individuals who have worked in our movement for a long time,” Sheinbaum said. “We know them, we stand with their families, and we will give her [Brugada] all the support the city needs from the Mexican government.”
While Mexico continues to grapple with high levels of violence—much of it linked to powerful drug cartels—the capital has generally maintained a reputation for being safer than other regions. Nonetheless, recent years have seen a surge in political violence across the country, with at least 50 political killings reported in the first three months of 2025 alone, according to local media.
The double homicide echoes past high-profile attacks in the capital, including a 2020 ambush on then-Security Chief Omar García Harfuch, who survived the assault, though two of his bodyguards and a bystander were killed.
