Germany Lifts Range Restrictions on Weapons for Ukraine, Sparking Tensions with Moscow
Germany’s newly elected Chancellor, Friedrich Merz, has announced the removal of range restrictions on weapons supplied to Ukraine, as per Fox News.
Speaking at a forum hosted by WDR public television, Merz confirmed that Germany—along with its allies Britain, France, and the United States—will now permit Ukraine to use Western-supplied weapons to strike military targets inside Russian territory.
“We will do everything in our power to continue supporting Ukraine,” Merz stated in a post on social media platform X. “This also means no longer having any range restrictions on the weapons we supply. Ukraine can now also defend itself by attacking military positions in Russia.”
Merz, leader of the Christian Democratic Union (CDU), has positioned himself as both a staunch supporter of Ukraine and an advocate for diplomatic engagement.
In response to Merz’s announcement, Kremlin spokesperson Dmitry Peskov warned that lifting range limitations would escalate tensions and could lead to severe consequences.
“This move runs contrary to our efforts to reach a political settlement,” Peskov said. Moscow also warned that nations supplying such weapons could be viewed as direct participants in the conflict and may face retaliation, including the threat of nuclear force.
