Celebrations for Liverpool FC’s Premier League triumph turned tragic on Monday night when a driver ploughed his car into a densely packed crowd, injuring at least 27 people, including four children, Al Jazeera reports.

Four victims remain in critical condition.

Merseyside Police identified the suspect as a 53-year-old white British man from the Liverpool area. Officers believe he acted alone and have ruled out terrorism as a motive.

Videos shared on social media show a dark-coloured car swerving through supporters near the parade’s endpoint, where Liverpool’s players had been displaying the Premier League trophy from an open-top bus. Spectators can be seen thrown into the air as the vehicle sped forward.

Twenty people were treated on site for minor injuries while 27 were transported to local hospitals.

Hundreds of thousands of supporters had braved pouring rain to line a 10-mile route through the city, waving scarves and setting off red flares as fireworks burst above the Royal Liver Building. The festivities, marking Liverpool’s first title celebration with fans since pandemic restrictions, were winding down when the car ramming occurred.

Liam Robinson, leader of Liverpool City Council, said the violence “cast a very dark shadow over what had been a joyous day.” Police rapidly released the suspect’s description to head off misinformation, mindful of last year’s riots sparked by false social-media rumours after a stabbing in nearby Southport.

Prime Minister Keir Starmer called the incident “appalling,” adding on social media:

“Liverpool stands together and the whole country stands with Liverpool.” He thanked emergency services for their swift response.

Liverpool FC said it is in direct contact with police: “Our thoughts and prayers are with those affected by this serious incident.” The Premier League also expressed shock, offering support to the city and the club.

The suspect remains in custody as detectives investigate circumstances leading up to the crash. Authorities are appealing for eyewitness videos and urging anyone with information to come forward.
