Wyoming Air National Guard Launches New Recruiting and Retention Flight with Historic Activation

The Wyoming Air National Guard marked a significant milestone last week with the formal activation of its Recruiting and Retention Flight, officially recognizing the unit during an Activation and Assumption of Command Ceremony held at Joint Force Headquarters, DVIDS reports.
The newly established flight, now an official unit within the Guard’s organizational structure, is tasked with supporting recruitment efforts for the 153rd Airlift Wing and broader US Air Force mission. US Air Force Captain Nicole Zoellner assumed command of the flight during the ceremony, making her one of the first officers in the nation to lead a recruiting and retention unit as its own distinct entity.
“This is such an exciting time for the flight to be moving forward,” said Capt. Zoellner. “Recruiting and retention has always been given the expectation to push and do more, but now they are given the resources to make that happen.”
The activation ceremony included the presentation of official orders by Brigadier General Barry Deibert, marking the unit’s formal recognition. With the guidon posted and military personnel standing at attention, Gen. Deibert declared the flight operational as of May 17, 2025.
The establishment of the Recruiting and Retention Flight reflects the Wyoming Air National Guard’s continued focus on building a strong future force. Recruitment has long been a challenge in Wyoming due to its small population and rural nature. Despite these factors, the Guard’s recruiting and retention team has seen notable success — ranking in the top 15 nationally for enlistment numbers last year.
With its new status as a formal flight, the unit will benefit from enhanced resources, a defined chain of command, and additional personnel support. Recruiters will also gain new professional opportunities under the designation of “talent management craftsmen.”
The flight has been tasked with reaching 102% manning for the 153rd Airlift Wing by 2028 — a goal that reflects both ambition and confidence in the team’s capabilities. Captain Zoellner emphasized that recruiters play a vital role in helping individuals find purpose and opportunity in military service.
“Our recruiters let interested people know that by joining the Wyoming Air Guard they can be the heroes of their own story, and we are here to be their guide,” she said.
