The Wyoming Department of Transportation (WYDOT) is preparing to roll out a new $20 million software system aimed at improving efficiency and streamlining services for residents, KGAB AM 650 reports.

The update, scheduled to go live this summer, is part of an effort to modernize WYDOT’s technology infrastructure and reduce the need for in-person visits to Driver Services offices.

The new system, called MAX, will replace the existing RIS platform, which has been in use since 1986. According to WYDOT officials, the current system has become increasingly difficult to maintain, prompting the need for a more modern and user-friendly alternative.

“RIS is outdated, and it’s become almost impossible for our IT team to maintain it,” said Misty Zimmerman, Driver Services Program Manager at WYDOT. “Our new software, MAX, will be much more efficient for Driver Services employees and for the citizens of Wyoming.”

The MAX system will be integrated into a broader platform known as oneWYO, offering a range of online self-service options. These include renewing a driver license, ordering a driving record, scheduling driving test appointments, and other routine transactions. WYDOT says these digital services will reduce wait times in physical offices and make it easier for residents to manage transportation-related tasks without taking time away from work or other responsibilities.

The software upgrade is the result of House Bill 254, which was passed by the Wyoming Legislature in 2021 to fund and authorize the development of a new system.

“We all know the stereotypes commonly associated with visiting ‘the DMV’,” Zimmerman said. “MAX and oneWYO are our latest tools to fight those stereotypes in Wyoming.”

As the agency prepares for the system launch, WYDOT plans to announce temporary office closures to accommodate staff training and other transition activities.
