Drivers in Cheyenne, Laramie County, and Albany County should plan for traffic changes and possible delays over the coming months as the Wyoming Department of Transportation (WYDOT) begins or continues two major construction projects in the region, KGAB AM 650 reports.
According to WYDOT spokesperson Andrea Staley, one project is already underway while the other is set to begin next week. These efforts are part of ongoing maintenance and infrastructure upgrades and will involve lane closures, detours, and width restrictions throughout the summer and early fall.
The first project, a district-wide pavement patching initiative in partnership with Simon Construction, began recently on Wyoming Highway 212 (College Drive) in Cheyenne.
Crews are currently working between mile markers 2.72 and 3.67, from South Greeley Highway to Laramie County Community College. This phase includes Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) upgrades at the intersection of College Drive and Avenue C, followed by lowering manholes, milling, and paving. A short-term detour is expected for Avenue C while concrete cures, and a 12-foot width restriction is in place during the work.
Once work is completed on College Drive, the project will move to US Highway 30 (East Lincolnway), between mile markers 368.36 and 371.13, stretching from Craigy J to Archer. Similar traffic control measures, including flaggers, pilot cars, and width restrictions, will be implemented during this phase.
The final leg of the pavement patching project will shift to US Highway 287, south of Laramie, from mile markers 407.5 to 409.9. Crews will remove the current chip seal, apply a new plant mix surface, and later install rumble strips along the shoulders and centerline. This portion of the work is expected to continue through October.
A second WYDOT project will begin Monday, June 2, weather permitting. This effort focuses on concrete pavement replacement and ADA upgrades at the intersection of College Drive (WYO 212) and 12th Street in Cheyenne.
The east and west legs of 12th Street will be closed during this phase, with detours in place. Traffic along College Drive will be reduced to a head-to-head configuration within the southbound lanes, accompanied by a 12-foot width restriction. A temporary traffic signal will also be installed at the intersection of Lincolnway and Cleveland Avenue.
Contractor Reiman Corporation will begin by replacing pavement in the northbound lanes before shifting traffic and moving on to the southbound side. Additional components of this project will include concrete work on the I-25 northbound on-ramp at Missile Drive.
Drivers should anticipate lane closures, detours, reduced speed limits, and other disruptions throughout the course of these projects.
WYDOT encourages motorists to remain alert in construction zones and plan for possible travel delays.
