Starting June 3, United Airlines will require all passengers traveling on domestic flights to check in at least 45 minutes before their scheduled departure, USA Today reports.

The change marks a shift from the previous policy, which allowed passengers without checked bags to check in as late as 30 minutes prior to departure.

The new rule is designed to create consistency across United’s operations. According to a statement from the airline, aligning the check-in deadline with the existing cutoff time for checked baggage ensures a more streamlined experience for travelers and staff alike. It also brings United’s policy in line with those of many other major US carriers.

“The change brings greater consistency for our customers by aligning with our current checked baggage deadline and the check-in policies followed by most other airlines,” a United Airlines spokesperson said.

While the change may affect passengers who are accustomed to checking in at the last minute, United’s updated guidelines are unlikely to surprise frequent flyers. Most airlines recommend that travelers arrive at the airport at least two hours before a domestic flight and three hours before an international one, though these are suggestions rather than strict rules.

Despite that flexibility, airlines retain the right to deny boarding to passengers who fail to meet the required check-in deadlines, regardless of whether they have checked bags. For that reason, industry experts advise travelers to give themselves a comfortable buffer to avoid potential complications at the gate.

Full details of United Airlines’ check-in and baggage policies can be found on the airline’s official website.
