A once-beloved staple of the Costco food court is making a comeback — but not quite in the form fans expected.

The Washington-based wholesale retailer has introduced the “Combo Calzone,” a new take on the iconic combo pizza, which was discontinued to the disappointment of many longtime members. The calzone, priced at $6.99, is filled with the familiar ingredients of its predecessor: pepperoni, sausage, mozzarella cheese, onions, bell peppers, olives, and mushrooms.

While the new item is clearly inspired by the original combo pizza, customer reactions have been mixed.

Some Costco fans took to Reddit to share their thoughts, and the response was far from unanimous. One user commented, “Those toppings sound familiar… It’s the combo pizza!” while another quipped, “We kept asking for it and it looks like they folded.”

A customer who tried the calzone at a Costco in Lansing, Michigan, described it as “all right,” but noted, “It’s kind of like a big slice folded on itself, so it has a ‘crust.’ I felt like it was a little overcooked, but maybe it was just my location. I don’t think I’d get it often, but I don’t regret trying it.”

Others weren’t as generous. “Seems like Costco will do anything but bring back the combo pizza,” one frustrated user wrote.

Some of the harshest feedback centered on the promotional images of the new offering. “It even looks overcooked in the photo,” one person said. Another chimed in, “Sans picture, the idea of a ‘Costco Calzone’ is wildly appealing to me, but nothing about that photo makes me want to try it. Does it even have cheese?”

“Those pictures are objectively unappetizing,” echoed another commenter.

Despite the criticism, a few customers gave the new calzone a thumbs-up. “Had one today, it was delicious!” one Redditor reported.

The Combo Calzone is the latest change to Costco’s popular food court menu. Earlier this year, the retailer announced that it would be replacing Pepsi products with Coca-Cola fountain drinks. And in early 2024, fans said goodbye to another favorite — the churro — which was discontinued without much fanfare.
