Elon Musk Urges Lawmakers to “Kill the Bill” Amid Clash with Trump Over Budget Plan

Just days after stepping down as head of the White House’s Department of Government Efficiency, Elon Musk is publicly calling on Americans to reject President Donald Trump’s proposed federal budget package, warning it would worsen the national deficit.
Musk, once a prominent backer of Trump’s economic agenda, has become one of the most vocal critics of what the president has dubbed his “big, beautiful bill.” The tech billionaire claims the legislation, which passed the House in late May, would add at least $5 billion to the federal deficit.
On Wednesday, Musk took to social media to rally opposition to the measure, posting an image of the 2003 film Kill Bill — a not-so-subtle call to action.
“We need a new bill that doesn’t grow the deficit,” Musk wrote on X.
In another post, he urged his followers to contact their representatives:
“Call your Senator, Call your Congressman, Bankrupting America is NOT ok! KILL the BILL.”
The spending package, passed largely along party lines before the Memorial Day holiday, has faced resistance from fiscal conservatives in the Senate, including Sen. Rand Paul (R-Ky.), who objects to what he describes as reckless spending and a potential increase to the debt ceiling.
“This massive, outrageous, pork-filled Congressional spending bill is a disgusting abomination,” Musk wrote Tuesday. “Shame on those who voted for it: you know you did wrong. You know it.”
Musk also voiced his frustration in a recent CBS interview, saying the bill “undermines” efforts made by the Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE), which he led until resigning last week.
“I just can’t stand it anymore,” he added.
Trump, meanwhile, has defended the bill, arguing it is essential for national priorities and economic growth. While he has publicly criticized senators like Rand Paul for opposing the legislation, the president has so far adopted a more restrained tone regarding Musk’s rebuke.
“Look, the president already knows where Elon Musk stood on this bill,” said White House Press Secretary Karoline Leavitt during a Tuesday press briefing. “It doesn’t change the president’s opinion. This is one big, beautiful bill, and he’s sticking to it.”
