The Wyoming Game and Fish Department is inviting residents and visitors alike to enjoy the outdoors during its annual Free Fishing Day, scheduled for Saturday, June 7, Wyoming News Now reports.
Held each year in conjunction with National Boating and Fishing Week, the event allows individuals to fish on Wyoming’s public waters without a fishing license for one day only.
“Free Fishing Day is June 7th this year and it is a day where residents and nonresidents can fish without a fishing license — as long as you’re not fishing in Yellowstone National Park or the Wind River Reservation,” said Janet Milek, Public Information Officer for the Game and Fish’s Casper Region.
While the license requirement is waived, Milek emphasized that all other fishing regulations remain in effect. Anglers are still expected to follow rules related to creel limits, bait and tackle restrictions, and any area-specific guidelines.
Beyond the opportunity to fish for free, the department and its partners will be hosting a variety of activities throughout the state — many geared toward children and families.
“The Wyoming Game and Fish Department partners with a lot of organizations across the state to host kids’ fishing events,” said Milek. “Watch locally — there are events all over the state, and each one is different.”
In Casper, a kids’ fishing event will be held at Yesness Park from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. Activities will include fishing instruction, prize giveaways, and even free fishing poles provided by North Platte Walleyes Unlimited.
“This really is a fantastic opportunity to get a free pole, learn how to fish, and have a great day outdoors,” Milek added.
