A Texas grand jury has indicted 18-year-old Karmelo Anthony on a first-degree murder charge in connection with the fatal stabbing of 17-year-old Austin Metcalf during a high school track meet in April.
The incident occurred on April 2 at Kuykendall Stadium in Frisco during a rain delay. According to authorities, a verbal dispute escalated between the two teens after Metcalf reportedly asked Anthony to move from under a team tent.
The confrontation later continued in the stadium bleachers, where Anthony allegedly pulled out a knife and stabbed Metcalf in the chest. Metcalf died at the scene.
Collin County District Attorney Greg Willis confirmed that his office presented evidence to the grand jury over several weeks, resulting in the formal indictment. Anthony was arrested on the day of the incident and has since been released on a $250,000 bond. He remains under house arrest and is required to wear an ankle monitor.
Anthony’s legal team stated that the indictment allows the case to proceed to court, where they intend to argue that he may have acted in self-defense. A trial date has not yet been set. If convicted of first-degree murder, Anthony faces a sentence ranging from five years to life in prison.
