Wyoming is well-known for its abundance of outdoor recreation, offering everything from serene campgrounds and extensive hiking trails to picturesque rivers and lakes, Only In Your State reports.

While many of these destinations are perfect for a summer day outside, one experience stands out for its unique blend of tranquility, natural beauty, and adventure—the Green River Lakes Canoe Trail in Bridger-Teton National Forest.

Located near the town of Dubois, the Green River Lakes Canoe Trail begins at the Green River Lake Campground. From there, paddlers can traverse the Lower Green River Lake and follow a narrow channel that leads to Upper Green River Lake. This nearly 9-mile water trail provides the opportunity to enjoy both paddling and scenic views, offering a refreshing way to explore Wyoming’s landscape.

The trail is accessible for both casual and more experienced paddlers. However, it’s important to note that the current between the two lakes can be strong. Depending on the water level, some may need to step out and pull their canoe or kayak through the shallower sections. Despite these challenges, the trail remains a peaceful experience. Even if the campground seems busy at the outset, the water route allows adventurers to quickly spread out and find solitude on the lake.

One of the highlights of this canoe trail is the view of Squaretop Mountain. Towering at roughly 11,600 feet, this distinctively shaped peak creates a dramatic and unforgettable backdrop. Whether glimpsed from a distance or up close, Squaretop Mountain is a striking feature that contributes to the area’s visual appeal.

Many visitors choose to make the trip last a bit longer by packing camping gear and spending the night along the trail. At a leisurely pace, the full out-and-back trip takes several hours, but the experience is just as rewarding if you only paddle partway. Wildlife sightings, fishing spots, and moments of quiet reflection enhance the journey.

For those who prefer to stay on solid ground, the Lower Green River Lakeside Trail offers another way to enjoy the area. This 6-mile hiking path begins near the same campground and follows the shoreline of the Lower Green River Lake. With about 500 feet of elevation gain, it provides a moderate alternative for experiencing the region’s beauty without getting on the water.
