A beach visitor in Queensland received a shocking lesson in wildlife safety after unknowingly picking up a highly venomous cone snail, a creature capable of killing an adult human within minutes.

The visitor, who was walking along the shoreline, found the snail’s shell and picked it up to admire it, unaware of the deadly risk. Wildlife experts later identified the species as a cone snail, which can deliver a venomous sting potent enough to paralyze and kill its victim within hours, and in some cases, within minutes.

Queensland Museum’s marine specialists warned that while cone snails are visually striking, they should never be handled. The snail’s venom is delivered through a harpoon-like tooth, which can inject neurotoxins that block nerve signals and cause respiratory failure.

Fortunately, in this incident, the individual was not stung and turned the snail over to authorities after being informed of the risk.

Officials urge beachgoers to exercise caution when collecting shells or marine animals, emphasizing that even small creatures can pose significant dangers. Cone snails are found in tropical and subtropical waters worldwide and are often overlooked hazards for visitors unfamiliar with their appearance and capabilities.

If stung, individuals are advised to seek immediate medical attention, remain as still as possible, and apply pressure to the wound while waiting for emergency responders.
