A chilling image has emerged showing the Idaho man accused of ambushing and killing two firefighters while wearing “war paint” on his face just moments before the deadly attack.
Authorities identified the suspect as Charles G. Long, who allegedly opened fire on firefighters in Bonneville County, Idaho, as they responded to a brush fire on June 30. The attack resulted in the deaths of Captain Steve Denning and firefighter Jacob Hall, both of whom were working to contain the flames when the shooting began.
Investigators say Long had painted his face with dark markings before positioning himself to ambush the firefighters. In a photo released by officials, Long can be seen sitting near the scene of the fire with black stripes across his face, a rifle by his side, and a cold, focused expression.
Law enforcement officers responded quickly and took Long into custody after a brief standoff. According to the sheriff’s office, Long has been charged with two counts of first-degree murder and additional charges related to the ambush.
“This was a targeted, senseless act against public servants who were working to protect lives and property,” Bonneville County Sheriff’s Office stated.
The tragic deaths have left the local firefighting community and residents in mourning. Vigils are being planned in honor of Denning and Hall, who were both described as dedicated and courageous firefighters committed to protecting their community.
The motive for the attack remains under investigation, and authorities have not released further details on why Long targeted the firefighters.
