Former NFL quarterback Jeff Blake expressed skepticism this weekend over the chances of Shedeur Sanders securing the starting QB position with the Cleveland Browns, suggesting the rookie may need more time to develop before earning a starting role.

Blake, who spent 11 seasons in the NFL and earned Pro Bowl honors, told broadcasters that while Sanders impresses in practice and exhibits raw talent, the Browns may prioritize experience and readiness in their Week 1 quarterback decision.

“Teams don’t hand starting jobs to talented novices until they’ve proven themselves fully,” Blake said. “Shedeur’s got promise, but Cleveland might wait on a more seasoned veteran.”

Blake noted that the NFL’s quarterback apprenticeship model often delays rookie starters—especially those transitioning from college systems—until they demonstrate consistent command of the playbook and can lead under pressure. He emphasized the value of time in practice settings to gain trust and minimize rookie missteps in competitive games.

Sanders, a first-round draft pick, is scheduled to compete in the Browns’ summer training camp and preseason games alongside incumbent QB Dorian Thompson‑Robinson. Coaches are evaluating both players based on grasp of offense, decision-making, and adaptability under live-game conditions.

While Sanders’ athletic ceiling generates buzz, Blake advised patience:

“Let him earn it. A slow build is often more sustainable than a fast crash.”

Whether the organization will embrace the rookie remains uncertain, though Sanders’ confidence and accuracy during offseason reps have drawn early praise.

Cleveland fans will have their first close-up look at Sanders during the preseason opener in early August.
