Leaders, finance ministers, and development experts from around the world gathered in Valencia today for a United Nations-hosted conference aimed at boosting global development funding. The three-day event, hosted by Spain’s government, seeks to address the widening gap in financing for Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) amid rising global economic strains.

Delegates will engage in high-level discussions on mobilizing public and private capital to support crucial development priorities, including climate resilience, quality education, and health systems. A key focus is innovative financing tools—such as green bonds, blended finance, and debt-for-nature swaps—to help lower-income nations bridge fiscal shortfalls.

UN officials highlight a critical gap: developing countries face a projected annual shortfall of $1.7 trillion in funding needed to meet the SDGs by 2030. Conference organizers hope to set concrete funding targets, encourage fresh investment commitments, and foster partnerships across sectors.

Spain’s Finance Minister emphasized the event’s role in reaffirming international solidarity in a fragmented world.

“Global challenges require global solutions,” he said, urging attendees to translate talk into financial action rather than diplomatic pageantry.

Side sessions will also focus on increasing transparency, enhancing domestic resource mobilization, and strengthening partnerships between international financial institutions and recipient nations. Civil society groups are expected to push for equitable, locally led development practices.

Organizers aim for the conference to conclude with a detailed roadmap outlining commitments, financial instruments, and accountability mechanisms to accelerate progress on the SDGs ahead of the next UN summit.
