Jimmy Swaggart, a prominent American televangelist and gospel music figure, has died at age 87, his ministry announced. Swaggart rose to national fame in the 1970s with televised sermons and recordings that drew millions of viewers and listeners worldwide.

Born in Ferriday, Louisiana in 1935, Swaggart began preaching in the 1950s before launching his own television ministry in 1971. His broadcasts featured a signature blend of fiery sermons and spirited piano-accompanied gospel music, solidifying his influence in the Christian religious community. He built the Family Worship Center in Baton Rouge, Louisiana, which became the base for his international outreach through television, radio, and music.

Swaggart’s career was marked by both acclaim and controversy. He became one of America’s wealthiest evangelists in the 1980s, but his reputed success was followed by public scandal in 1988 involving a prostitute and again in 1991. Each led to brief moments of national scrutiny and temporary exiles from his ministry, although he continued to maintain a loyal global following.

In addition to his television ministry, Swaggart authored books, produced award-winning gospel recordings, and conducted large-scale revival events drawing tens of thousands. His financial network also included Swaggart Publishing and the Baton Rouge School of Hope, reflecting his influence in faith-based education and publishing.

Jimmy Swaggart’s death leaves a notable void in American evangelical media. His legacy—marked by powerful preaching style, dedication to gospel music, and resilience amid personal struggles—has left an indelible mark on 20th-century Christian broadcasting.
