The U.S. House of Representatives has passed President Trump’s sweeping legislative package, widely referred to as the “One Big Beautiful Bill,” following nearly 29 hours of debate and negotiations on the House floor.
The bill passed with a narrow 218-214 vote and includes an extension of Trump-era tax cuts, a $5 trillion increase in the debt ceiling, expanded funding for defense and immigration enforcement, and significant cuts to programs such as Medicaid and federal food assistance. It also introduces new work requirements for welfare recipients and repeals a range of clean-energy tax credits.
House Speaker Mike Johnson and President Trump made direct appeals to Republican lawmakers to secure the votes needed for passage, emphasizing the bill’s focus on economic growth, tax relief, and enhanced border security. President Trump described the legislation as a cornerstone of his domestic agenda, highlighting its potential to boost investment and strengthen national security.
The debate saw intense opposition from House Democrats, with Minority Leader Hakeem Jeffries delivering an extended speech criticizing the bill’s impact on vulnerable communities and warning about its potential to increase the national debt while reducing social safety nets for millions of Americans.
The bill will now proceed to President Trump’s desk for his signature, with the signing expected to take place during Fourth of July celebrations. If signed into law, the bill will represent one of the most substantial legislative victories of Trump’s current term.
