Thailand’s ruling coalition has appointed a new acting prime minister as the country copes with intense political instability following the recent resignation of its previous leader.
Parliament confirmed Deputy Prime Minister Suthipong Kunplome as acting prime minister on Thursday. His interim role is set to maintain government functions while coalition parties negotiate the appointment of a permanent successor. The vote in the lower house passed with strong support from key parties within the governing alliance.
This appointment arrives amid growing pressure on the coalition, which has faced internal disagreements and public protests over economic stagnation and concern about corruption. The previous prime minister stepped down after coalition factions failed to agree on cabinet reshuffles and policy direction.
Acting Prime Minister Suthipong has emphasized his aim to stabilize the government and prepare for a formal selection process. He affirmed the coalition’s commitment to continuing policy reforms addressing inflation, foreign investment, and social welfare programs. However, he acknowledged that the coalition must resolve internal disputes to present a clear path forward.
Political analysts observe that Thailand’s parliamentary system allows the swift elevation of an acting leader but note that long-term governance will hinge on coalition unity. Talks to form a permanent leadership team are expected to continue over the coming weeks.
