The Bureau of Land Management’s (BLM) Wyoming State Office announced this week that it will hold an oil and gas lease sale on September 16, 2025, offering 37 parcels covering a total of 45,178 acres across the state.
The sale marks the next step in the BLM’s regular process of managing federal oil and gas resources. All offered parcels were subject to a public scoping period in March and an environmental review process that concluded with a public comment period ending in May. The BLM has now opened a 30-day protest period for additional public input, which will close on August 7.
The lease sale will be conducted online through EnergyNet, the BLM’s official auction platform for federal oil and gas leases.
Leasing is an early phase of potential energy development. Before any drilling or production activities can begin, companies must submit an application for a permit to drill (APD), which outlines detailed development plans. These applications undergo environmental analysis and interagency coordination before approval.
All parcels included in the upcoming lease sale carry stipulations aimed at protecting natural resources, including wildlife habitats, water resources, and cultural sites. The BLM evaluates each parcel to determine the appropriate safeguards based on environmental assessments and stakeholder input.
Maps, documentation, and guidance for submitting protests are available on the BLM’s ePlanning portal at: https://eplanning.blm.gov/eplanning-ui/project/2036327/570.
The BLM manages federal lands under a multiple-use mandate, which includes balancing energy development with conservation, recreation, and other public interests. This lease sale is part of the agency’s ongoing effort to provide domestic energy resources while incorporating public feedback and environmental stewardship.
