Taiwan has launched its largest-ever Han Kuang military exercises, conducting 10 days of drills designed to simulate potential Chinese invasion scenarios and test the island’s defensive readiness.

The war games, which began on July 9, involve thousands of troops, reservists, and advanced defense systems in exercises that simulate attacks on key infrastructure, communication disruptions, and full-scale assaults on air and naval bases. The drills are focused on testing Taiwan’s command structure and civil defense capabilities under conditions that would occur during a major conflict.

For the first time, the exercises include advanced rocket systems, air defense systems, and the integration of cyber and electronic warfare simulations, reflecting modern battlefield challenges and lessons learned from other global conflicts. The drills also include civil defense components, with local governments activating emergency shelters and coordinating with military units to prepare for potential disruptions during a conflict.

Taiwanese officials emphasized that the drills are intended to enhance readiness and demonstrate the island’s ability to defend itself, maintaining that the exercises are a necessary precaution given ongoing tensions in the region.

The Chinese government has condemned the drills, calling them unnecessary and provocative, while Taiwan has stated the exercises are focused solely on self-defense and ensuring the security of its people.
