A labor strike in Philadelphia has concluded, allowing city services — such as trash collection and public pool operations — to resume after workers reached a tentative agreement with municipal officials late Monday.

The strike, which began last week, involved sanitation workers and seasonal employees at city-run public pools. Both groups halted their duties to press for improved pay and benefits amid higher living costs and concerns over understaffed city services.

Key highlights of the agreement include:

  • Sanitation workers have accepted a wage increase of 5%, effective immediately, along with additional compensation for overtime and weekend shifts.
  • Public pool staff secured a 4% wage increase and extended employment through Labor Day to meet community demand.
  • Both departments agreed to lower health insurance premium contributions and increased paid sick leave.

City officials have praised the deal, stating that it reflects a balanced resolution addressing workers’ concerns while protecting the city budget. Mayor Cherelle Parker called it “a fair agreement that restores vital services and supports the dedicated city workforce.”

Workers returned to their jobs Tuesday morning, and crews have already begun catch-up operations to clear missed trash pickups and prepare pools for reopening. City residents welcomed the resolution, noting the importance of restored services during the summer season.
